I try to do a mix of both. I like to make my viewers laugh, even if I appear a tad ditzy while doing so (done mostly on purpose--I learned long ago in the strip club most men spent more on the girls who came across as ditzy). And if possible, I throw some innuendo into the regular talk. Some days I do mostly naughty talk, others not as much. That way they still feel like they're getting a glimpse of my personality, but they don't get completely distracted by unsexy (& not lucrative!) or mundane chatter. And I don't get quite so bored from sounding like a broken record.
Most men can't really think with both heads simultaneously, and a lot of guys log on already hard. So by the time they're ready to interact they want someone who is ready to run with their fantasies.
Much will depend on your preferences and that of your clientele though; regular chatting could be quite necessary if you prefer doing gfe stuff. But for me personally it's better to have guys thinking with the head in their pants--it has far fewer hangups about spending money
