I am in favor of all adult entertainers taking control over their income. However, I do not think that you should run your own camsite for others yet. Unless you have knowledge of the webcam business, can obtain your own payment processor, and have an budget for marketing...I would not do that. But I support your decision not to be trapped under the big box sites. If you want to let go of those big box sites, than you should start off indie and not look back. However, I would suggest you do this after you build an enough clientele via your own indie methods.
There's an few ways of going indie.
1. You can cam in the virtual worlds of Second Life, IMVU, and Red Light Center. You have no one really polydicking your shows, you charge what you want, and control more your income. However, you need an top-niche avatar, some computer savvy, and super hustle.
2. You can use Reddit and sexting forums to advertise your cam shows. Usually, guys love paying with PayPal and Google Pay for some reason. Plus, there's pressure of doing more taboo shows for more money. (Sexting Forums really have tons of money in them but you must search hard for great customers.)
3. Advertise on deep web ( This should be if you want to offer less than mainstream shows and cater to depraved fantasies), using an VPN, TOR, and other stuff to do this. There's places you can advertise your services. But it can make you tons of money if you play your cards right.
4. You can sign up for Indie Bill, SkyPrivate, and places like that. That way, you do not have to worry about an payment processor.Smiley
5. Create an website and get your own payment processor. This way you're not beholden to anyone but the payment processor. Now, this is the hardest part of the industry and that's why very few attempt this. Payment processors can run past 500 dollar mark and beyond unless you have those who take 3.4 percent cut per sale. So, you have to budget your overhead, marketing, and other stuff if you take an indie approach. You can also use fluttyvision and adent.io if you want to use webcam software for newbies. Or you can go all out and do an partnership with OdysseyCam. I would suggest you do this if you have an budget to pay 1800 dollars for their equipment
