1. Be an Entrepreneur.
You may not feel this way quite yet, but this is your business. This means you wear several hats. First and foremost, you are a customer service representative. Be nice but firm with your customers. Don't chat for free if you don't want to. You're in sales - be direct with potential customers. The more you chat for free without bringing up selling a show, the less likely he is to understand that your time is money. Unless you want to pay someone to build and promote your website and all the graphics that go with it, you're going to have to learn basic graphic and web design. This makes you an amateur designer/marketing guru. If you're selling clips, you're going to have to learn to edit video. The good news is you should definitely leave your taxes to a CPA. That doesn't mean you shouldn't track your income and save receipts, though.
2. Build a Website.
Whether you're independent or you work on Streamate or MFC, your customers are going to look for you. By owning a website that isn't just your cam profile, you are increasing your internet presence, which means more money for you. You'll be learning a new skill and it's going to work toward financial security.
3. Realize the Power of Google.
This starts with your stage name. Your stage name should be memorable. Customers will Google you, and you want your name to be easy to spell, easy to remember, and most importantly, unique. Alliteration can work in your favor. Names that contain Destiny, Candy, Jasmine, Alexis, Amber, and Ginger are common, and while there is definitely nothing wrong with them, they aren't exactly unique. Chances are, there is already a webcam model named Ginger or Destiny that has a larger fan following. You want to make yourself stand out, and you definitely don't want customers confusing you for another girl.
Learn how to utilize Google. Google Analytics is a great tool for tracking your traffic and search keywords. By knowing what your potential customers are searching for, you know what they're (possibly) willing to spend money on. Google Insights is great for knowing what keywords are being searched for most often worldwide. Enter keywords that are pertinent to this industry, like "skype" or "webcam show" or "webcam girl". Use these keywords and you will gain more web traffic.
4. Don't Expect Experienced Girls to Hold Your Hand.
Forums like StripperWeb and sexcamtalk (as well as this article) exist to help new girls out. In order to roll in your money, you need to do your own research. You may think you have a unique question or situation, but trust me, we've heard it all. Before you ask a question, try to search for the answer yourself. Additionally, don't expect girls to give up their moneymaking secrets to an inexperienced model. In a perfect world, we'd have all the information we needed to start making a thousand dollars a day from day one. With experience, you will learn what niche makes you the most money. Be patient, be nice, and don't whine if we don't hand you the answer.
5. Don't Accept Paypal.
Not only is it giving away your personal information for free, it's a financial risk. Paypal is notoriously anti-adult industry. If they so much as suspect you are using their service for adult work, they will ban you for life (this means no eBay!) and they could seize every dime in your account. By building your own website, you can accept a credit card processor of your own. Or you could sign up for Domino's Damsels and skip the approval process.
6. Building a Regular Customer Base Will Keep You Afloat on Bad Days.
As much as 80% of your income should be from repeat business. This means you should be reliable and honest with your customers from the get-go. You'll have to deal with plenty of timewasters, so truly value the customers that respect your time. Keep your promises, don't upsell excessively, and don't cash and dash. These are the easiest ways to gain regulars.
7. Find a Secure, Trustworthy Payment Processor.
You have more freedom by running your own website and payment processor. Remember that if you rely on a cam site for your paycheck, there is always a chance that they will cash and dash on you. This has happened with several sites, and especially studios. Customers may be weary of paying through your site, but once you've demonstrated that you're honest and trustworthy, most will be happy to pay the way that benefits you most.
8. What Site Should You Work On?
The sites with the most traffic are MyFreeCams, LiveJasmin, and Streamate. They pay out 50%, 35%, and 35%, respectively. You need to decide what factors are most important to you. The things to look for are: Percentage of money kept by you, site rules (promoting yourself outside the site), payout methods, and clientele. Many sites are overrun with freeloaders and have very little paying traffic. Some girls really love working on cam sites, but it's not for me personally. I prefer to keep all of my money, and I'm not the greatest at entertaining a whole room unless the right people are in it. Avoid studios at all costs. The benefit rarely offsets the amount of money they take from you. Most of them are no better than pimps.
9. Remove Personal Data From Photos
Rename your photos that have any identifying information. Delete your EXIF information before selling or uploading photos. If you have photos taken by a professional photographer, keep in mind that their'camera may have GPS. This could give away your location.
10. Network!
Network with other cam models, potential customers, graphic designers, photographers, legitimate promoters, journalists (if you want media attention) and other adult industry reps. Knowing people is never a bad thing, and that can be the difference between paying the rent and being homeless. Social networking is huge nowadays, and it's all free. Use sites like Twitter, Tumblr, StumbleUpon, StripperWeb, FreeOnes, sexcamtalk, Facebook, Digg, Sodahead, YouTube, Pinterest, and any other site you can think of.
