I just finished dealing with a second Amazon gift card scam attempt. His behavior was almost identical to the first, though the chat did not start out the same and this dude seemed reasonable for a bit. I started to catch on that he was wasting my time, first just by gut reaction to his neediness. My instinct was confirmed when he claimed to have paid Amazon and gave me the confirmation number. If you haven't seen this yet, you probably will. It's a common issue on the Wall of Shame!
So let's play Name that Scammer! What signs do you notice that start making you suspicious, and what typical behaviors do these losers have? I'll start. Scammers:
will have repeated trouble with payment options
will try to negotiate the price lower
will call over Skype repeatedly even when they're told not to
will pretend to have trouble to get more attention
will try to convince you that an Amazon gift card confirmation number is
the same as getting the actual gift card (sigh...)
will NOT respond to very obvious directions
will accuse you of scamming them to waste more time
will whine the whole time about wanting to see you on video
I've put a time limit on suspicious characters but it's still frustrating! So what clues you in?
