Tax Talk

This topic is about taxes. We don't like to pay them, but if you want to run a legal business you'll have to.

This is how it works in the Netherlands (and in a lot of other European countries, because of the EU laws):

VAT in the Netherlands is 19% 21%. When you start a business in the Netherlands supplying goods or services (like being a cammodel) you have to register with the tax authorities and the Chamber of Commerce. VAT tax returns have to be filed on a regular basis (month, quarter or year). From the VAT you charged on your services you should deduct the VAT that has been charged to you by other businesses (for instance if you buy stuff that is needed for work like your internet connection, or a webcam, sextoys etc). The balance is either to be paid to the tax authorities or to be refunded to you by the tax authorities.

From the total amount you made you can deduct the costs of all the things you needed for work. This will be your gross income. Your gross income is subject to income taxes (which are in the Netherlands between 33.45% and 52%, all depending on how high your income is).

Since most of you are from the other side of the Atlantic, it might be more interesting to know how the tax system works over there. My question to you. How does it work and what kind of things are deductible? How do you do it and what kind of tips do you have?
