I would suggest trying another site if you seem to be making increasingly less with what you're doing now. I had the same issue on one site but I'm very glad I didn't give up, because now I've found a better site for me and it's actually getting easier to make more money. It is my only job, but the bills do get paid. It CAN replace a "real job" because it IS a "real job." The more I've hammered that fact into my head the better I've done.
You are so right about this in ALL aspects of life, not just camming. If I can add something I've learned, it's to not let this get to you. We are in a business that has huge potential for making us feel insecure and jealous (if we let it.) All day we're surrounded by images of people we consider to be more attractive, younger, successful, popular, wealthier than us. BUT we don't see the hard work they put in to get to that point, their insecurities or struggles or sweating at the gym. All we see is this polished image, and that's the point. Not only do they appear successful for it, they ARE successful for it. Getting upset that we're never going to be "the best" is very damaging to our potential to be OUR best.

I've learned a few things in my time of being a cam girl. One major thing is that no matter how much you try, you can NEVER be the best. There is always someone out there with twice the fans, twice the payers, and making twice the cash you are.
