I am also new to the cam lifestyle. Below are my thoughts just based on my own experience so far.
First, I would go sign up for a free user account on some of the popular sites (Chaturbate, Stripchat / Xhamster Live, Camsoda) just to name a few. Then go watch some show to have a better understanding. Pay attention to the models who have a new status on their profile picture. These new models tend to be starting which is more something that anybody wanting to get involved can related easier to. Compared to the more professional look porn type shows. Also look for shows that show models moving around their home or out in public. This is more real-world situation instead of just being on a bed and looking like they work for a company.
Finally, Geo blocking is your friend, if privacy is an issue for you. Keep in mind once you go live or post any content there are certain thing that can’t be undone that easy.
In the end embrace whatever makes you happy and have fun.
