How camgirls are making thousands of dollars on Snapchat
Last weekend, at the SLS Hotel in South Beach, Florida, approximately 25 camgirls milled around excitedly inside the hotel's poolside meeting room, enraptured by the pitch they were being sold. On screen were the words: 'You are in control.'

The seminar at the 2015 camming conference Cam Con presented the ins and outs of a new app, Chatstar. Customers find a model on the Chatstar site and they pay for her phone number for a month. (It's all routed through a system, so no one's actual digits are being given out.) The models then choose the rates and customers pay for incoming and outgoing texts.

Chatstar allows fans to trade sexy photos and banter with their favorite adult performers, such as spokesmodels Gianna Michaels (NSFW) and Dani Daniels (NSFW). But it's also designed to help camgirls make more money without even stepping near their computers. And money is something a camgirl is always interested in making more of. At the mere mention of it, the women became giddy.

'It's genius,' one camgirl said, to no one or everyone. All of their hands shot up in the air as the women asked questions. Can they add a wish list or a tip option? (Not yet, but the app's developers are open to suggestions.) Will the app show up on clients' bills? (Chatstar is not an adult service, but a 'communications platform,' so the company's non-porny-sounding name will show on the bill.)

Cam Con is in its second year, rebranded from Camming Con to Cam Con so as to include some porn actors and even an Instagram star. But for the most part, the models are still female camgirls catering to a straight male audience. The founders of the porn industry event are former PlayboyTV host Stacey Havoc and Clinton Cox. 'We wanted to create something that caters to the models, because the models drive this business,' Havoc explained.
Camming is a growing industry. At its best, it's like one-on-one porn with a touch of psychotherapy. Performers connect with their fans via webcam, staging X-rated shows in the privacy of their bedrooms. They're empowered to make their own schedules, set their own rates, and work from wherever they want. They choose their level of intimacy with fans, the amount of skin they'll display, and how much individual attention they'll offer customers. A convention like CamCon gives them the chance to meet fans and fellow camgirls in person, as well as learn about new money-making digital platforms.

Because most social media sites prohibit nudity and sexually explicit content, camgirls are obviously limited in how they can market themselves and interact with fans. That's why camgirls are constantly developing new and elaborate ways to generate revenue. They do a delicate dance of promoting themselves online and through social media sites, while not obviously breaking the rules.

All the women the Daily Dot spoke with emphasized that Twitter is their preferred format for promoting. And though Twitter has strict rules against selling adult or sexual 'products' on its site, no doubt we've all seen a boob or two on there. There was little talk of ways to make money on Twitter, but camgirls seem to be able to turn a profit using Snapchat and Instagram, but sometimes by not playing by the rules.

'They're using [social media] more, they're gaining more followers, and as they gain more followers, they're getting approached with more work,' Havoc explained. 'They're getting approached by companies like, 'Hey, if you wear this dress and take a picture, I'll pay you this amount for every 'like' you get.''

One woman in attendance said that modeling on Instagram was her primary source of income. A long-time porn industry makeup artist, Jenn Marie Jaen is also a successful Instagram model, meaning she's extremely adept at taking sexy selfies on the social platform. In fact, she's garnered 241,000 Instagram followers in just a few years.....
