A client who follows me on Twitter logged into his Facebook, and found my personal Facebook in his suggested friends list. He recognized me immediately. x_x
Luckily he is a very kind person and warned me about it, and made a few suggestions about how to fix it. (I offered him a half price show for his gentlemanly act.) So off I went, frantically looking at the settings of my Twitter account, discovering there was absolutely nothing in common with my Facebook and Twitter accounts. Of course! I was super careful and used a different email, turned my location off, all that.
So I then went into my Facebook privacy settings and made sure only "friends of friends" could find me/send me friends requests (me and the client had no friends in common) because it was sent to "everyone". I also changed my profile picture to something other than a picture of my face, that's how he recognized me. This may be enough to keep my Facebook from telling on me again, but I was seriously about to delete it altogether (I hardly check it and everyone on there annoys me).
My Skype app had sync'd with my contacts in my phone, and I did not realize this was happening until I had been using the Skype app for a few days. I didn't think that was revealing my private info in any way, but the syncing up of my cam work stuff with my phone contacts left me feeling unsettled. Then I found out that the cookies Facebook and Google uses are the bastards that probably caused this, since simply using the same device to login to different accounts is enough to screw you over, no matter how careful you may otherwise be with the accounts.
I have recently reached the point where I don't mind if people I know find out that I am a camgirl, even though I haven't come out to anyone yet. But clients finding out my real name and location? Um, yeah, that's the stuff of nightmares.
The things that Facebook and Google do to shit on your privacy without your permission are really scary, and I had no idea about it and thought I was covering my tracks really well. I know this is a subject that comes up quite a lot, but since I foolishly thought I was being cautious enough, I never really paid much attention whenever camgirl identity protection tips came up.
It's part of the risk we take anyway. This may be "well, duh" to some of you, but just in case, I wanted to put it out there for those of us who didn't think of it before. Be careful out there!
