If webcams are the future of porn, they may just have had their moon landing. While the tech world hovers over the Consumer Electronic Show in Vegas, Maitresse Madeline, San Francisco-based domme and Kink.com porn director, has auctioned off a private hour-long webcam show for an astounding $42,000. Beat that, Bitcoin.

The bidding in the two-week long auction began in the hundreds of dollars, but quickly escalated to thousands and then tens of thousands of dollars. The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, will get a one-on-one webcam session with the femdom director.

The webcam (or 'cam') business has been one of the bright spots in the beleaguered porn industry in recent years, as the experience can't be pirated. Cam stars can sometimes make as much as twenty thousand dollars in a single month without ever leaving their bedroom or studio. But even in the highly lucrative cam business, Maitresse Madeline's $42K payout is a record-breaker. We checked in with the noted domme, to talk about the auction, her clients, and the future of the porn business.

This is Kink's first webcam auction. How did it come about?
I've been working on a project called Divine Bitches 2.0. Traditionally femdom websites are basically solo girl sites with a femdom edge. They offer movies and photos, but also ways to interact with a particular dominatrix within the femdom arena. I've been building a model inspired by that concept but on a much larger scale and more exclusive. It's a place where the women of Divine Bitches can offer such things as auctions for pantyhose, shoes, signed photographs, chastity-key holding services, fin domme services and auctioning off high end cam shows, VIP memberships to Divine Bitches, etc. Working with Divine Bitches will give these women instant exposure to thousands of serious fans of femdom and put them in a class above the rest. The auction and the infrastructure built to support this kind of auction was the first offering of the project to roll out and go live. I'm thrilled with the result.

Why do you think the numbers went so high so quickly?
The auction had people placing bids within the first hour it went live. It went into the thousands after the weekend and once it shot up to 10K there were a handful of serious high bidders who knew what they wanted and weren't going to let anything get between them and the prize.

Camming is the way I entered the industry No matter where my career takes me I will always have a soft spot for that kind of interaction with fans. It's how I learned to be a good performer, where I've been able to do countless hours of research on the many fetishes and kinks of human sexuality, and how I realized that interaction was going to be the future of the porn industry. Camming gives me a deep understanding of the psychology behind why someone pays for something like this and allows me to give them the experience they desire and deserve.

It looks like the bids jumped up by large amounts the previous bid was $30,000.
By the time we reach these high end bid amounts we're dealing with another level of customer. These types of customers are willing to pay for the performer they want, when they want and how they want. They're often paying for the ambiguity that a webcam relationship can create and that relationship over webcam is, essentially, their fetish. They often want to be whoever they can dream up over the internet and prefer to only have a relationship online. Other times, it's about the kinkiness and sexy taboo of the exchange of high dollar amounts that actually gets them off.

Have you heard of any other adult performer making this much?
I've never heard of any other adult performer making this kind of money for a cam show, but I'm sure that private pro dommes have some loyal high-end clients.

A lot of people will think $42K is an incredible amount of money for an hour's work it puts you on par with Lady Gaga and Oprah in terms of earning power. What do you tell people who wonder how it can be worth it?
Again, people are paying for something they don't get in their normal life whether that's a fetish that they are afraid to live out in real life or maybe their partner won't give them what they desire and they look to cams to fulfill that missing part of their sexuality. People want to remain anonymous and they pay for anonymity. Some men are looking for financial domination and that's what gets them off. Often it's a chance to get to know your favorite performer. Whatever your reason is, it's a custom made experience just for you in real time with no strings attached, whenever you want.

You've also done webcam shows and work doing financial domination. What's the most you've made in a cam show?

I used to have a customer who would pay me $1000 to hang up on him after one minute of dominating him in a cam show. But this auction wasn't findom.

This sounds a lot like porn for the 1%. Who are the clients who are able to pay this much for an hour cam session?
Clients that are able to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a cam show are generally men who are independently wealthy. This doesn't mean they're billionaires but they're people who have acquired enough financial stability not to depend on anyone for help and their money is working for them. They are no different than any other client in the sense that, once I get to know their particular fetish, they just want to be able to explore it safely and with a skilled person who accepts and understands. In other words, I enjoy the business aspect of what I do just as much as the community and performance aspects.
Was the winner someone you'd interacted with before?
I haven't had any contact with the customer yet but I did just reach out to him by email today congratulating him on his winning bid and to set up the date and time of his show.

What will the cam show be like?
That is completely up to him, but he can expect whatever he decides he wants to do with that hour that he will have the best, most high-end cam experience of his life.

I guess the most important question how are you going to use the money?
I'd like to buy a unique space in San Francisco and open a beautiful, innovative dungeon. [Divine Bitches] 2.0 is only the beginning. This is a place where a dominatrix can ethically offer the internet services that femdom fans want and where femdom consumers will know they are getting top quality service and product. Beyond DiB 2.0, I save earnings from these offerings someday to be able to open up my own space where a dominatrix can practice their art safely and ethically and where patrons can let go of any shame they feel and explore BDSM face to face. I'm very interested in collaborating with the community and the skills I've gained in film making, advancements in technology and interactive camming to give the traditional dungeon a facelift and offer dommes more ways to sell their product.
