VPN advice

I really should have looked into using one of these ages ago and that's strange considering I'm tech savy. I've always been more concerning about connection speed rather than privacy. I think it's time I got serious

Does anybody here use a VPN on their internet connection?
Which one would you recommend or avoid like the plague?
Importantly, does it slow your connection?

I use IPvanish without any problem with my connection using two not so powerful laptops with 2 Logitech cams broadcasting on two sites on each laptop + 2 skype. But I must specify that I have always an excellent connection
