Try for longer shifts. If you had a grocery store you might see no customers one hour then have a back to back rush the following. You wouldn't just close up for the day if it starts quiet.
I try and plan how many hours I will be online and work them regardless. Sometimes I do dip in for an odd hour but it's usually only if I know there is a particular client who wants to play in that time.
Many times I've gone an hour with no gold at all. But also sometimes I've had an hour with well over $100 so it makes up for it.
